Braces have come a long way in recent years! If it’s been some time since you looked into orthodontic technology, you may be surprised at what is available today. Here at Lakewood Orthodontics, we offer a variety of different orthodontics treatments, including clear braces, metal braces, surgical orthodontics, and Invisalign. Below are 3 different types of braces, please let us know if you have any questions about which braces are best for your situation!
1. Metal braces/Traditional braces – These are the metal brackets and wires that most people picture when they hear the word “braces.” However, modern brackets are smaller and less noticeable than the notorious “metal-mouth” braces than many adults remember. Plus, new heat-activated archwires use your body heat to help teeth move more quickly and less painfully than in the past. Source: Oral-B
2. Ceramic braces – Ceramic braces cost more than stainless steel versions, but they’re made to blend in with the teeth so they aren’t as visible. You can choose between clear elastic ties or white metal ties to hold the braces in place.
Though the braces themselves won’t stain, the ties can easily discolor, especially if you consume foods or drinks that typically stain teeth, such as coffee. Your orthodontist will replace the ties every time he or she adjusts the braces, which is usually every month.
Ceramic braces are more sensitive and can easily break or chip. They require more maintenance and more time to install than metal braces, which increases overall treatment time and cost. Source: Angies List
3. Smart brackets – Smart brackets are the latest technology in braces. Intended to function as a braces system that provides measurements and information which can help reduce the total amount of time that the braces are worn. Source: I Get Braces
